  • Episcopalians organize in Texas

On this date in 1839, Rev. Caleb Smith Ives reported the organization of Christ Church, Matagorda, probably the first Episcopal church in Texas. Formerly, during most of the period of Mexican Texas, Protestants could not practice their faith openly in Texas, since the Mexican government required allegiance to the Catholic Church. In 1838 Robert Chapman and Caleb Smith Ives were invited to open schools in the new Republic of Texas. Ives conducted the first Episcopalian service in the republic at Christmas 1838, and reported the first organized congregation a month later.

KCTI AM 1450 to host Texaco Country Showdown.

The “31st Annual Texaco Country Showdown” is coming to Yoakum. Texans, Outlaws, and Legends, KCTI AM 1450, will once again host America’s largest country music talent search and radio promotion on Saturday, June 9th, at Yoakum Gin and Feed.

Approximately $200,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded nationwide including the Grand Prize of $100,000 cash to the National Winner, presented at the National Final televised special.

Designed to find the most promising country music talent in the United States for the past thirty one years, the Texaco Country Showdown gives aspiring artists a chance to launch their professional careers. Thousands of performers compete annually for the Country Showdown title.

Each spring and summer hometown talent contests sponsored by over five hundred local radio stations across the country pave the road to stardom. Local winners advance to over forty state contests where the prizes include $1,000 in cash and the opportunity to compete at one of the five regional contests in the fall. The five regional winners receive an expense-paid to the National Final to compete for $100,000 and the coveted National Title.

“We consider the Texaco Country Showdown one of the most anticipated events in country music each year,” said Egon Barthels, Program Director at KCTI AM 1450. “It is an exciting community event that provides aspiring artists in our area an opportunity for state, regional, and national exposure while promoting a greater appreciation of country music. We are pleased and proud to join once again Yoakum Gin and Feed as host of our local Texaco Country Showdown.”

Open to vocal and/or instrumental performers, the Texaco Country Showdown welcomes individual acts or groups with up to seven members to compete. Acts also must not have performed on a record charted in the top 100 country format of Billboard, Radio and Records or the Gavin Report within eighteen months preceding local competition. A $20.00 entry fee is required of all contestants entering the Texaco Country Showdown competitions produced by participating country music radio stations. To ensure fairness, a uniform judging system is used on all levels of competition.

We'll have more information and entry forms available soon!

KCTI announces adjustments to programming selections PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 November 2011 13:35

On November 1st, 2011, Gonzales-based radio station KCTI-AM 1450 program director Egon Barthels announced an adjustment to its “Texans, Outlaws and Legends” programming format. The station will shift focus more towards the legends of country music.

During the announcement, Barthels made mention of a recent survey of KCTI-AM 1450 listeners and advertisers. “Many were very complimentary with the direction of the station and our commitment to Gonzales County local news, but we heard a clear message that the community wished to hear more Classic Country legends, such as George Jones, Waylon and Willie, and Patsy Cline. We also heard a demand to keep some titles from country music’s superstars of the 80s and 90s in the mix, such as older George Strait, Tim McGraw, Reba, and Garth.  The music adjustments are effective immediately.

Contemporary Texas Country music will continue to be spliced in during The Texas Morning Show weekdays from 6 to 9, and Sunday afternoons from Noon until 7 with the popular Texas Country Weekend and Texas Red Dirt Roads with Justin Frazell shows. Contemporary Texas Country artists include Wade Bowen, Kevin Fowler, Robert Earl Keen, Roger Creager, and Cody Canada & The Departed. The 1450 Polka Club with Mister John will continue weekdays from 9-noon.

KCTI-AM 1450 news and information programming will also continue, Barthels said. “We still air the Texas State Network news hourly along with the Texas Farm Bureau’s Agriculture newscast, plus frequent news and weather updates during the morning show,” he said. “Throughout the day we air various news, local event information and public service announcements. Our Facebook page is also continuously updated with local news articles and community information.

“KCTI is here for the Gonzales County community. We are committed to local radio that gets results for our advertisers and gives our listeners a professionally produced and exciting listening experience” Barthels said.
